Interlock Driveways & Patios: The Foundation Behind Long-Lasting Results

A beautiful driveway is not just about the pavers — it’s about the foundation underneath.

🔹 The Importance of a Strong Base

A proper base is the most critical part of any interlock project.

For driveways, a minimum excavation depth of 16 inches is strongly recommended. This allows for a solid foundation using crusher run, which compacts tightly and provides the structural strength needed to support vehicle loads.

For walkways and patios, a base depth of 6 to 8 inches is generally sufficient. In these areas, HPB (High Performance Bedding) is often the preferred material due to its excellent drainage and ease of installation.

🔹 Layer-by-Layer Compaction

One of the most common mistakes in interlock installation is poor compaction.

A professional installation requires filling the base in layers and compacting each layer thoroughly before adding the next.

This process prevents future settling, sinking, and uneven surfaces — ensuring your investment lasts for years.

🔹 Interlocking Pattern & Stone Placement

The way pavers are laid plays a major role in durability.

Using patterns that break continuous lines (such as herringbone or modular patterns) helps create a strong locking effect between stones. This distributes weight evenly and prevents shifting over time.

🔹 Choosing the Right Paver Thickness

Not all pavers are the same — thickness matters.

  • Driveways: 70–80 mm thickness is recommended

  • Patios & walkways: 50–60 mm is typically sufficient

Using thinner stones in high-load areas can lead to cracking and failure.

🔹 Paver Size & Design

Smaller pavers tend to provide better load distribution, stronger interlock, and longer lifespan.

However, modern designs often use larger pavers combined in multi-size patterns, offering a more contemporary look while still maintaining structural integrity when installed correctly.

🔹 Polymeric Sand Benefits

Polymeric sand is essential for long-term performance.

It helps lock pavers together, control moisture between joints, prevent weed growth, reduce insect activity, and stop soil buildup between stones.

Without proper jointing material, even the best installations can fail over time.

🔹 Drainage Matters

Proper drainage is critical for any interlock project.

A well-built surface should have a slight slope to direct water away and prevent pooling. Water is one of the main causes of damage in landscaping — controlling it is key.

🔹 Edge Restraints

Strong edge restraints prevent the pavers from spreading over time.

Without proper edging, stones can shift outward, gaps will form, and the surface will lose its integrity.

🔹 Built to Last

At KD SUMMER LAND, we focus on proper excavation, high-quality materials, and precise installation.

We don’t cut corners — we build to last.
